Abstract
This paper was planned to explore one aspect of women's subjectivation that took place under the dominant ideology of Confucianism in the late Joseon Dynasty. To this end, we investigated the meaning of Hangul Ganchal themselves in relation to Confucian female subjectivation by examining Hangul Ganchal of women, and examined the aspects of ‘daughter-subject’ performed by married women through Hangul Ganchal of daughters. The Hangul Ganchal of the late Joseon Dynasty are part of the Confucian female subjectivity in that they practice benevolence through filial piety, but the Korean letters sent by daughters are even more extraordinary in that they are mediated through the ‘primary relationship’ between parents and children. Hangul Ganchal sent by married daughters in the late Joseon Dynasty show that the form and principle that the writer of the letter seeks subjectivation as a daughter in Hangul Ganchal sent by married daughters in the late Joseon Dynasty is ‘guilt.’ The guilt that becomes the form of subjectivation is an unconscious guilt that comes from suffering, and this can be said to be an effort to stand as a ‘daughter-subject’ in the face of the suffering that they cannot help but experience as a married daughter. And the substantive sense of guilt due to unfilial piety toward one’s parents becomes the principle of subjectivation, the other side of the desire to become a moral subject by practicing ‘Ren(仁)-Hyo(孝)’ This sense of guilt exemplifies the married daughter's attachment to the higher norm of ‘filial piety toward parents who gave birth to her’ despite the subordinate condition of the ‘movement of filial piety’ and can be said to show the struggle of married daughters in the late Joseon Dynasty to become moral subjects through the practice of ‘Ren(仁)-Hyo(孝)’ while still existing as ‘daughter-subjects’ despite being outsiders.
