Abstract

The present study examined the images of fathers and mothers found in children’s narratives in Kim, Won-il’s ‘A Soul of Darkness’ and Yoon, Heung-gil’s ‘Sheep.’ Different from the past society where fathers themselves maintained a vertical rule, the modern society established a new horizontal rule based on a contract relation and the rule regulated fathers and resulted in the fall of fathers. Now they are not the rule any longer and even they are treated as criminals. Therefore, they are excluded, confined and, furthermore, put to death. Moreover, they are rejected and denied by their children. Mothers, which replaced the fallen fathers, also become barren beings who lost the ability to reproduce and bring to their children terrible hunger and unbearable burdens. As a result, mothers also become the objects of separation to their children and suffer psychological estrangement from their children. In this way, to children in the modern society, fathers and mothers were not the objects of inclusion but the objects of exclusion.
