Abstract

■ ABSTRACT The Fictions of Yeom, Sang-seop and His Carrier of Translation of Modern European Fictions Kim, Kyung-soo This treatise is an inquiry on the impacts of modern western fictions to the fictions of Yeom, Sang-seop. As a foundational writers of modern Korean fiction, Yeom, Sang-seop had translated some of european fictions, including Ivan Turgenev, V. M. Garshin, Wilhelm Schmidbonn, Alexandre Dumas, and A. Daudet. Through the experiences of translations, Yeom, Sang-seop could learn many devices and techniques of writing of fictions. Love and Sin(1927) and The Three Generations(1930) is the exemplary fictions that shows the close intertextuality of his fictions with some european fictions he had translated. His fictions actively novelized the european fictions, especially in the aspects of characterization and plot and many narrative methods. Les Trois Mousquetaires of Alexandre Dumas and the Eve of Turgenev is the model and the sources of his social novels. So his translations of european fictions ia a significant to the formations of modern Korean fictions. In other terms, that is other sides of the novelization of modern Korean fictions. It is worthy of remem- bering that the creation of femme fatal is an important contributions of Yeom, Sang-seop because that is a founding of anti-heros of fiction as a character. This is a very important contributions of Yeom, Sang-seop to the formations of modern Korean fictions.
