Abstract

Japanese intellectuals at that time were to understand the Western social world (social philosophy) using the thinking style of traditional pragmatic ‘Silhak (Realist School of Confucianism)’. It is thought that Lee In-Jik was “to place much more importance on the country-oriented stren- uous efforts than restoration of the livelihoods of the public” in 「sociology」and to allusively criticize the principle of laissez-faire of the innovative Confucian journalists such as Park Eun-Sik who aim for the modern- ization and to contend that then current external crisis which was “national society started to corrupt and was to reach extermination” should be overcome with pragmatism = nationalism. In the story of Mr. Kim’s son doing business in Uljin or the criticism on conquest by the strong in 「Silver World」, not only the criticism on the exploitation and greedy atrocity committed against people are implied but also the criticism on ‘social Darwinism (the principle of laissez-faire) which says that the struggle for existence is social principle’.
