Abstract

Unlike Nietzsche, whose critique of modernity coincided with his criticism of religion, Masahari Anesaki argued that religion could provide modern principles that transcend utilitarianism and materialism. He maintained that science, art, and morality must be rooted in a religious spirit, rejecting both the subjectivist universalism of science and the notion of a mystical source of truth, goodness, and beauty. Shoji Anesaki's religious studies sought to achieve social integration by reconciling the individual and the state, which had previously been considered incompatible. The similarity between the Confucian emphasis on “religion” and the Christian concept of “religion” within Western civilization, as well as the evolving political-religious dynamics of the modern transition period, contributed to the emergence of a new novel genre. This genre, which critiques civilization through the mystical religious studies of the Lee Jin-boo school, developed in a competitive relationship with rationalist political novels grounded in reason. The Yi Jin-byeong school of new novels, which pursued social integration from a fundamentalist perspective, had previously resisted rivals during the modern transition period. However, it eventually faced competition from “naturalistic literature,” which focused on private individual experience detached from national society. As a result, the school gradually faded, ultimately dissolving into something non-literary.
