Abstract
At the present paper, I have tried to characterize the pioneer of Korean modern linguistics, Lee Sung-nyong(李崇寧, 1908~1994), as a person and a scholar. Lee was born on 6 July 1908 in Seoul Korea. In march 1930, he took up the study of Korean linguistics at Keijo Imperial University, on contrary to his family's tradition and expectation. The course of lectures in that year, 1930~1933, was given by professor Ogura Shimpei who dealt in particular with Korean linguistics and philology. But Lee, who was introduced to the general linguistics, often expresses his great appreciation of the lecturer, Kobayashi, in his autobiography. He enjoyed reading the many books on European linguistics and studying several European languages, English, Deutsch, French, Russian, Greek, etc. He estimates, in conclusion, that Korean linguistics is not only particular linguistics but also general linguistics. In search surroundings Lee did his scholarly work. His major subject is language change across phonological, morphological and lexical change, but the history of Korean linguistics a minor subject to him. His teaching as a professor for Korean linguistics at Seoul National University, 1945~1973, was led to the fundamentals of Korean modern linguistics as a pioneer. All Korean linguists have adopted his point of view. Lee Sung-nyong had a long and happy retirement, in which he continued his scholarly work. He said that he wanted to devote all his time to various scholarly and scientific work in progress.
