Abstract

In this paper, I tried to disclose the rhetorical aspects in the literary criticism of Ko, Suk-gyu. He was oriented to the rhetoric that is no longer normative or descriptive but more or less openly raises the question of the intentionality of rhetorical figures. He tried to combine the rhetoric and the psychologic or the philosophy. He was interested in the figural language. In Existence of Black, he showed the essay style of writing and the figurative language. He believed that the truth can be manifested only through it. This concept of language constitutes the basic force of his work, by which he seeks to create or transform the existence through language. He regarded the symbol as that of modern poetry. At the same time, he emphasized the imagination which have a power to integrate the intellect and sensibility. In order to explain symbol, he introduced the principle of ‘analogy’ and ‘intuition’. He thought that the symbolic poem can reach the depth of metaphysics. It means that he was oriented to romanticism. In addition, he sought for the paradoxial sprite in modern Korean poetry. He tried to examinate the paradox not in its figure level but in its ontological level. He thought that Kim, Soh-wall, Lee, Yuk-sa, Lee, Sang, Youn, Dong-ju, this all the poets represented in their poetry the negativity which is the important principle of paradox. The paradox that he explained was similar to the symbol.
