Abstract

A Study on Chukbyokga as a Transformation of The Romance of Three Kingdoms Chung, Hak-sung In the heroic romance of The Romance of Three Kingdoms(三國志) and Chukbyokga(赤壁歌), we can find an aesthetic which gives populace a chance to indirectly fulfill their desire for the political ideal to resist the tyranneous ruler and their need for political power and leads people to experience the heightening of their oppressed feelings. But Chukbyokga is found to severely transform the context and narrative structure of the original text of The Romance of Three Kingdoms. Such a transformation shows a tendency of parody which intends to systematically dissolve and overturn narrative structure and aesthetics of heroic romance. Such an unusual structure and aesthetics of Chukbyokga which juxtaposes or contradictorily unites heroic romance and anti-heroic parody were possible through the unique literary structure and aesthetic principles of Pansory, and the seemingly contradictory aspects of Chukbyokga can be understood and received as coherent unity when they are considered under the light of “Shinmyong”, which refers to the specific aesthetic consciousness of Koreans.
