Abstract

This paper explores main literary features and significances of Ilsayusa by Jang, Ji-yoen in comparison with Hosanoegi and Ehyanggyenmunlok, which belong to the same genre of the compiled biographies. Ilsayusa follows its generic tradition that has focused on the biographies of middle-class writers and artists, but it also extends the same genre's dimension by including the lives of women of the aristocratic class. Ilsayusa broadly accepts the tradition of its precedents in the motives of its compilation, in its structure of writing, and in its description of the lives of its heroes and heroines. Its compilation is motivated by a strong sense of mission to relate to later generations the lives and practices that are in danger of being regrettably forgotten. Ilsayusa concentrates its objective on disseminating the ideals of humans complying with the values and ideas of the traditional ages, rather than trying to present types of humans of a new age. Ilsayusa faithfully keeps the tradition of the compiled biographies of the past, but it also extends to the maximum the literary dimension of the genre, the compiled middle-class biographies. But this work also reveals the process of this traditional genre's deconstruction by positioning itself between these two ambivalent strategies.
