‘일사/유사’ 편집의 정치성과 젠더 정치의 무/의식―1916년 『매일신보』 연재 <일사유사>를 중심으로―

Abstract

This article analyzes “Ilsayusa”, which was serialized 180 times over a period of 8 months from January 11, 1916 to September 5, 1916, in the Songjaemanp’il’l section of Maeil Sinbo, from the perspective of ‘editing’. Through the analysis, the cultural politics of editing mediated by the meanings of “Ilsa” (Hidden people), and “Yusa” (Incidental records) and the asymmetrical understanding of gender were explained. Chang Chiyŏn practiced alternative historical writing and expanded literary history through the serialization of “Ilsa Yusa”. In addition, he wrote with reference to oral listening as well as literary records, taking into account the subject’s historical and cultural context. This is a strategy that makes visible the invisible reality of history, culture, and literature. In fact, the style of “Ilsa” includes a collection of legends, historical records, poetry, folk tales, stories, etc., and genealogy was performed to connect the characters in the series with the contemporary times and history of Chosŏn and China through the commentary. This kind of writing strategy can be seen as a practice of historical and cultural ‘earth grounding’ that visualizes the identities, lives, and capabilities of historical figures who have been excluded or omitted due to reasons such as status, regionality, and politics. Chang Chiyŏn emphasized that even in cases defined as ‘voluntary hermit’, who is known as the premise of invisibility, it was actually mediated by ‘involuntariness’ in which one is socially excluded and cannot exert one’s abilities, but he did not consider this point for women. He still described the family role or focused on Confucian virtues in relation to women’s work. This article interprets this as ‘political unconsciousness’ and raises the gender asymmetry that was consistently projected in the editing of “Ilsa and Yussi”.
