同化는 同化主와 被同化主인 두 분절음이 해당 동화자질을 共有하는 것이다. OCP에 의거한 異化도 본질적으로는 기저형이나 표면형에서 자질의 공유를 요구한다는 점에서 동화와 동일한 음운론적 목표를 가진다. 동화에 의한 자질 공유의 구조는 어간의 再構造化에도 投影되어 공시적 음운현상의 일반적인 틀을 벗어나게 하는 원인을 제공하기도 한다. ‘푸+어→퍼(*푸어, *풔)’, ‘지+어→저(*지어, *져)’에 나타나는 공시적 교체의 표면적인 非自動性은 통시적인 동화현상으로 인한 어간 구조 재구조화의 결과에 의한 것이다. 圓脣母音化와 口蓋音化와 같은 동화과정을 통하여 각각 /푸-/, /지-/로 재구조화된 어간들은 모음 ‘우’나 ‘이’가 선행자음과 [원순성]이나 [전설성] 자질을 공유하는 자질 구조를 지니게 된다. 분절음 차원에서의 일탈적인 모음탈락이 자질 차원에서는 자연스러운 자질구조의 조정의 결과로 이해될 수 있다.
Abstract
The main purpose of this paper is to provide the phonological properties of and relation between assimilation and dissimilation. Pointing out the problem raised by the contrastive relation between assimilation and dissimilation, it is argued that their co-existence in a grammar is a natural result of speech act based on the duality of roles as both a speaker and a hearer. Assimilation is analyzed as a phonological process of feature spreading. Such a property of assimilation is actually identical to that of dissimilation(OCP) that requires the linked structure in lexical representation. The analysis in this paper is crucially based upon the corelation between diachronic assimilation and the restructuring of underlying representation. The basic rationale behind the relation between assimilation and restructuring is that a diachronic phonological process may have an effect on the underlying representational properties of a certain group of stems displaying eccentric phonological behaviors in synchronic phonology. Obligatory vowel deletion found in synchronic hiatus-resolving process in a certain set of stems with palatal onsets or labial onsets can be accounted for by positing a linked structure of a feature between the adjacent vowel and consonant. It is a natural reflect of diachronic stem-internal assimilation and the restructuring of underlying form.
