국어에는 인접한 자음이 표면적으로 같거나 닮는 현상이 다양하게 나타난다. 이러한 현상들은 부분적으로는 동화현상으로 다루어졌다. ‘표준발음법 제5절 음의 동화’에는 구개음화, 비음동화, /ㄹ/의 비음화, /ㄴ/의 유음화만을 국어의 규범적인 동화현상으로 보고, 그 이외의 자음동화는 인정하지 않고 있다. 하지만 국어의 일상적인 발화에서는 인접한 자음이 같아지는 현상이 그보다 더 다양하게 나타난다. 인접한 두 자음이 닮는 동화현상은 공시적으로, 통시적으로 많은 언어에서 나타나는 언어보편적인 현상이다. 그런데 동화현상은 환경의존적(context-sensitive)이므로 일정한 환경에서는 변화가 동일하게 나타난다. 하지만 국어에서는 동일한 환경에서 동화의 방향이 일정하지가 않는 경우도 있으며, 게다가 일상적인 발화에서는 그 변이 양상이 다양하다. 따라서 인접한 두 소리가 닮는 표면적인 결과만을 보고 단순히 동화로 분류하기보다는 관련된 요인에 대한 고찰이 필요하다. 한편, 국어의 동화현상에 대한 연구는 크게 조음방법과 조음위치적인 면으로 나뉘어 이루어져 왔다. 조음방법동화와 조음위치동화에 대한 인식의 차이가 있을 뿐만 아니라 두 동화현상에 대한 분석이 서로 다른 방법의 틀로 이루어지기도 했다. 이 글에서는 국어의 인접 자음이 동일해지는 현상을 통합적으로 살펴보고, 이러한 현상에는 음절연결제약, 조음제스처, 소리의 정체성 등의 요인들이 작용하고 있음을 밝히고, 이러한 요인들이 여러 자음연쇄에서 구체적으로 어떻게 작용하는지를 살펴보고자 한다.
Abstract
This paper discusses the identical consonantal sequences in Korean. These identical consonantal sequences occur frequently in Korean fast speech rate. I try to consider the reasons why they happen and show the factors on which they are based. They are so complicated that they cannot be divided simply into a manner assimilation and a place assimilation. They can be explained by the syllable constraint, articulatory gestures, and the sound’s identity. Besides, analogical process and prosodic position are related to these phenomena. It is necessary to study these factors more in detail. Especially, manner and place assimilation need to be reconsidered within a common methodology. I think it is also a feasible method for the study to have phonetic experiments and to consider perceptual naturalness. But it is more important to investigate Korean peculiarities completely and compare them with universals in realtion to assimilation, because assimiation is a univeral process.
