Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the correlation between the political ideology as refinement and the artistic self-consciousness in Lee, Byong Joo’s novels and reconceptualize the relation between terrorism and the autonomy of art. Thus this paper intensively analyzed the issue of “Terrorism and Autonomy of Art” and “Love and Art”, focusing on his first work “Novel, Alexandria” (1965) and his work in late period “Everything for the Terrorist”(1983). The autonomy of art of the leading character in “Novel, Alexandria” (1965)”, which expresses author’s culturalism and exot- icism compressively, is maintained by keeping a distance from ideology or political action(terrorism). This novel unveils one aspect of modernity, the disunity between art and ideology in the separation between art and ide- ology. This novel is constructed on the letters between a ideologist(older brother) and an artist(younger brother), which indicates this novel is nothing but a writing based upon culturalism embracing the autonomy of art. In “Everything for the Terrorist”, terrorism and the autonomy of art, however, are not separated from each other, yet are united in one human type. This novel accords the image of an autonomous artist to the image of a ter- rorist. The political autonomy of a terrorist and the ethics of self of ter- rorist resembles the autonomy of an artist structurally. Furthermore this novel defines a terrorist anonymously and saves terrorism and art from the standardized conceptualization. He transforms terrorism and art into anonymous passion that preserves individuality and autonomy that can never be conceptualized, yet this is, eventually, suggested at the level of liberal discourse, the discourse of the characters about terrorism and art. The specialness in Lee, Byong Joo’s literature is that he highlighted the new agenda about modernity of art and aesthetic modernity by par- alleling both the political and ideological topics and the issues related to the autonomy of art. Lee, Byong Joo’s works about terrorism and art show the two aspects-ideological self-justification and fictitious self-surveillance simultaneously, which is the refraction of liberalism and culturalism of the author in novels. Futhermore the unity and disunity between self-justi- fication and self-criticism is a characteristics of ‘modernity’.
