중국을 여행한 조선 使節團들의 見聞은 다양한 이야기로 조선에 전파되었다. 이 가운데 신뢰할 수 없는 이야기와 풍문이 섞이며 연행록의 성격에도 변화가 생겼다. 이 글에서는 건륭제 계황후의 유폐사건을 최초로 전한 홍대용의 기록을 중심으로 이 문제를 살펴보았다. 건륭제가 계황후를 유폐시킨 이유에 대하여 중국에는 두 종류의 이야기가 전한다. 하나는 소위 ‘江南獵艶說’로 강남에서 만난 새 연인에 의한 갈등설이고, 또 하나는 황후의 지위를 위협하는 皇貴妃 책봉에 의한 갈등설이다. 홍대용이 기록한 이야기는 황후의 大珠 분실과 侍衛官과의 불륜 사건을 결합시킨 후궁의 음모설로 중국에는 전하지 않는 새로운 이야기다. 홍대용은 이 풍문의 眞僞보다 누명을 쓴 황후를 위해 목숨을 걸고 忠諫해야하는 관료의 책무를 강조하는 담론으로 전환시켰다. 연행록에 수록된 풍문은 비록 사실과 거리를 두고 있지만, 수용자의 의도나 인식태도가 투영되어 있다는 점에서 사실보다 더 복잡한 현실을 반영하고 있다.
Abstract
Envoys of Joseon over heard many rumors during their visit to China. Rumors are not trust worthy but they were written on the Travel Diary because they were considered as other form of knowledge. These rumors were delivered to the King time to time. The incident of the empress imprisoned by Emperor Qianlong was one of the example. There are no records left explains why Emperor Qianlong started to hate the empress. The death of empress, after 1 year of her imprisonment, created many rumors based on this suspicious incident. The rumors written by Hong Daeyong, who were at the Beijing when this incident occured, differ with the rumors written by Chinese. The Emperor Qianlong started to suspect an affair between the empress and the guard after the empress claims the loss of her pearl necklace taken by the guard. However, this was all plot set by the royal concubine who was getting the love of Emperor Qianlong at the moment. However, the subject of this rumor changes as it was passed to Joseon. The rumor suddenly became about oppressive ruling about Emperor Qianlong and emphasize the fear of the oppressed intellectuals who could not speak about unjusted empress. The rumors written in the Travel Diary was very interesting but it distorted the truth time to time. However, the rumors are not just a lie. They were very complicated text which reflects the opinions of people about specific incidents at that moment, and intends and desire of people who delivers the rumors.
