飮食名에 붙는 接頭辭 ‘막-’에 대하여

Abstract

This paper aims to find out the formation and meanings of the prefix ‘mak-(막-) combined with the words about food, such as ‘makgeoli(막걸리)’, ‘makguksu(막국수)’, ‘makganjang(막간장)’, ‘makjang(막醬)’, ‘makgwaja(막과자)’, ‘maksoju(막소주)’, etc. Furthermore, in this paper, the author questions the common belief that the prefix ‘mak-(막-)’ is developed from the adverb ‘magu(마구)’ and indicates that the formation process of the prefix ‘mak-(막-)’ is multiple and related to many words. In chapter 2, the author points out the problems presented in the grammar books and dictionaries which believe that the prefix ‘mak-(막-)’ is developed from the adverb ‘magu(마구)’. In chapter 3, the author collects and analyzes all the meanings of the prefix ‘mak-(막-)’ which are used in the literature and public medias. And the results show that most of the meanings of the prefix ‘mak-(막-)’ have a fairly closed relationship with the word ‘mak(막)’ which means ‘just’ and during the formation of the prefix, its meaning is also affected by another meaning of ‘mak(막)’ which is ‘the last’. Also, the prefix ‘mak-(막-)’ means ‘be of inferior quality’ in the materials of the mass production system in the beginning of industrialization in 1960s. In chapter 4, the author discusses whether the inner structure of ‘makgeolli(막걸리)’ should be ‘makgele+i’ or ‘mak+gelli’. According to semantic salience of the prefix, speakers are never aware of the grammar category of ‘geolli’. So the author thinks that the inner structure of ‘makgeolli(막걸리)’ is more likely to be ‘mak+gelli’. In the end, the summary and further studies about this paper are presented in chapter 5.
