본 연구는 전건과 후건의 관계를 논리적으로 설명하기 어려운 새로운 유형의 반사실적 조건문을 제시하고 그 해석을 시도한다. 이는 가령 우연히 들르게 된 식당이 만족스러울 때 식사를 마친 후 ‘우리 여기 안 들렀으면 후회했겠어’와 같이 발화하는 것에 해당하는데, 기존의 논리학 전통이나 형식의미론 전통에서는 이러한 발화의 적절성을 제대로 포착하기 어렵다. 본 연구는 이러한 문장이 비명시적인 인과가 즉각적인 상호작용이 중요한 일상 담화에서 잘 이행되지 않아 발생한다고 분석한다. 이러한 비이행적인 인과의 조건문은 주로 특정 사건을 긍정적으로 평가하기 위해 사용되며, 일반적인 반사실적 조건문과는 달리 현실세계 발화시의 지식체계를 그대로 유지하여 평가의 기반으로 삼는다. 한편 비이행적인 인과의 조건문에서는 ‘-(으)면’이 ‘-다면’이나 ‘-었더라면’보다 선호되는 경향이 있는데, 이는 ‘-(으)면’과 ‘-다면’의 분포에 현 조건문 분류 체계로는 설명하기 어려운 점이 있음을 시사한다.
Abstract
This study proposes a new type of counterfactual conditionals, in which the relationship between the protasis and the apodosis is difficult to logically explain, and attempts to interpret it. This corresponds to, for example, utterings such as “wu-li ye-ki an tul-less-u-myen hwu-hoy-hayss-keyss-e(We’d regret it if we didn’t stop here),” for when one is satisfied with a restaurant they accidentally entered. It is difficult to properly capture the propriety of this sentence in the existing tradition of logic or formal semantics. This study analyzes these sentences, which occur because non-explicit causation is not transitive in everyday discourse where immediate interaction is important. These non-transitive causation conditional sentences are mainly used to evaluate a specific event positively. Unlike general counterfactual conditionals, the knowledge system during utterances in the real world is maintained, and it is used as a basis for evaluation. Furthermore, in non-transitive causation conditional sentences, “-(u)myen” tends to be preferred over “-ta-myen” or “-ess-te-la-myen”. This suggests that the distribution of “-(u)myen” and “-ta-myen” is difficult to explain with the current conditional classification system.
