조은주, 2023, 김억의 시와 평양의 장소성, 어문연구, 200 : 193~226 본 연구는김억의 시에 나타난 ‘평양’의 ‘장소성’을 분석하고 그 의미를 탐색한 것이다. 김억의 많은 시편들은 대동강, 능라도, 모란봉 등 평양의 명승지를 특정하며 이러한 장소들은 주체의 ‘상실감’과 연계된다. ‘평양’은 봄꽃이 만발한 축제적 공간이지만 사랑하는 ‘님’이 떠나고 홀로 남은 주체에게 부재와 소멸의 장소이다. ‘대동강’에서 주체는 강물의 파동을 응시하며 ‘애도’의 ‘노래’를 반복하는데 이때 노래는 수심가류의 ‘잡가’와 ‘민요’를 환기한다. 상실의 대상은 연인뿐만 아니라 ‘대동강’ 혹은 ‘평양’으로 표상되는 전통적 노래를 의미한다. 김억이 평양의 쇠락과 민요의 쇠퇴를 안타까워했으며 ‘수심가’를 향한 각별한 마음을 여러 번 피력했던 점 등은 그의 시에 형상화된 평양의 장소성이 전통적 노래의 상실에 관한 인식과 결속되어있음을 보여준다. 요컨대 평양을 배경으로 김억이 집요하게 형상화하는 상실감과노래의 이미지는 평양의 소멸을 애도하는 것이다. ‘평양’에 얽힌 특별한 장소성은김억이 지향한 수심가의 세계와 중첩될 뿐만 아니라 ‘되어가는 장소’로서의 평양의 ‘실천’이며 이는 1920년대 ‘서도 로컬리티’의 연장선상에서 김억의 시를 바라볼 계기를 만들어준다.

Abstract

This study delves into the “sense of place” within Kim Eok’s poetry, focusing on Pyongyang and its significance. Kim Eok’s poems intricately detail various landmarks in Pyongyang, including the Taedong River, Neungrado Island, and Moranbong Peak. These places are intimately tied to the “feeling of loss” for the subject in the poems. Pyongyang is depicted as a jubilant space teeming with blooming spring flowers, yet it transforms into a realm of absence and vanishing for the subject once the beloved, “a lover,” departs. In “Daedong River,” the subject gazes at the river’s waves, entwined with “memory,” struggling not to “forget” the person and echoing the “song” of “mourning.” This portrayal exhibits a sense of yearning and loss. The loss depicted in Kim Eok’s work not only signifies the departed lover but also represents the traditional songs embodied by “Taedong River” or “Pyongyang.” Kim Eok’s sorrow over the decline of Pyongyang and the fading of folk songs, along with his recurrent expression of fondness for “susimga” (愁心歌), highlights that the essence of Pyongyang in his poetry is intertwined with the perception of losing traditional songs. In essence, the persistent theme of loss and song in Kim Eok’s poems against the backdrop of Pyongyang signifies mourning for the city’s disappearance, signifying the loss of festivities and traditional songs. In essence, the unique essence of “Pyongyang” in Kim Eok’s poetry not only converges with the poet’s world but also reflects the “practice” of Pyongyang as a “place of becoming.” This aligns with the “locality of the western area” (西道) embedded in the works of major figures like Kim So-wol and Ju Yo-han from the 1920s and affords insight into Kim Eok’s poetry as an extension of the locality of the western area (西道).
