Abstract
This study started with the goal of examining the background and flow of Japanese Korean language studies from the Meiji period to the Japanese colonial period, and clarifying the correlation between their studies and those of Koreans. In this regard, it focused on briefly explaining the formation and development of modern Japanese linguistics, organizing the background and flow of Korean language studies in Japan, and describing the correlation with Korean studies based on this. The summary of the study is as follows. First, the formation of Japanese linguistics from the Meiji period to the Japanese colonial period was greatly influenced by their traditional national studies and Western linguistics. The introduction of the concept of ‘文典 (grammar model)’ in the early Meiji period and the introduction of comparative and historical linguistics methods due to the influence of Western linguistics clearly prove this. Second, from the Meiji era until the Japanese colonial period, Japanese studies on the Korean language occupied a large portion of the study of Proper Noun according to the historical methodology of historians, and the study of linguists had a similar trend. This trend can also be confirmed through the changes in the academic system and the development of history in modern Japan. Third, it can be said that the research subject and methodology are noteworthy in Japanese studies on the Korean language. The concept of language studies in modern times was a concept that encompassed language learning and language study, but as linguistics was considered a science, the concept of learning disappeared and language study replaced the concept of language studies. Fourth, although a more in-depth analysis is required on the issue of the correlation between Japanese studies and Korean studies, it can be confirmed that there was an indirect influence in ‘methodology and research subject.’ In particular, it can be seen that Korean studies did not uncritically accept Japanese studies, and an in-depth analysis related to this will be dealt with in subsequent studies.
