초록

Sigesbeckia glabrescens (Makino) Makino, belonging to the Asteraceae family, is a medicinal herb traditionally used in East Asian medicine to treat inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, paralysis, and allergic conditions. It is one of the original botanical sources of Herba Siegesbeckiae (豨薟), and is naturally distributed in Korea, Japan, and China. Although previous studies have demonstrated its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, the precise molecular mechanisms responsible for these activities remain inadequately elucidated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect potential of the ethanol extract of Sigesbeckia glabrescens using in vitro. Antioxidant activity was analyzed through DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assays, and the total polyphenol content was quantitatively measured. Sigesbeckia glabrescens effectively reduced the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Moreover, Sigesbeckia glabrescens significantly reduced the production of nitric oxide (NO) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and suppressed the phosphorylation of NF-ĸB p65, key components of the NF-ĸB signaling pathway. These results demonstrate that Sigesbeckia glabrescens exerts anti-inflammatory effects by modulating the NF-ĸB pathway. These findings suggest that Sigesbeckia glabrescens has the potential to be developed as a functional natural material for the prevention and management of oxidative stress- related and inflammatory conditions, thereby contributing to the sustainable utilization of medicinal crops in the bioindustry.
