Abstract

The Flower Youth in the Shilla-dynasty Korea admitted various ways of life from other cultures as realistic devices for themselves. If we are to understand the Flower Youth we must enter into their thought and try to appreciate what they felt and did. We have only a few historical materials, a few ruins of those days of the Flower Youth. Yet these few are to make us admit at the specific educational ideas and realities of the men of Shilla. Eschewing the aims of education such as knowledge for its own sake, this commission sought to state the aims of education in terms of the sociological realities of the Shilla of its day. Activities of the Flower Youth divided into several areas. According to this division, discipline activities should aim at preparation for ethical character, patriotic membership, and command of the fundamental processes. Here, in conclusion, we shall add a few remarks which should especially be observed by the youth as he approaches the years of early manhood. The youth should sometimes be released from the narrow constraint of school, otherwise his natural joyousness will soon be quenched. When the youth is set free he soon recovers his natural elasticity.
