Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of the study is to suggest better ways of teaching reading instruction after finding out difference of status and cognition no teaching reading comprehension for students with autistic spectrum between teachers and speech-language pathologists. Method: Participants of this study were special education teachers(n=258) and speech-language pathologists(n=153). The frequencies were calculated on status and recognition on reading comprehension teaching methods for students with ASD. The difference between special teachers and speech-language pathologists were analysed according to variables on status and recognition of reading comprehension teaching methods for students with ASD. Results: Special education teachers thought strategies for improving ASD reading comprehension were: language experience approach, meaning focused approach and direct instruction which were all applied in practice. Speech-language pathologists thought meaning based approach, story retelling, language experience approach and peer tutoring were important for ASD reading comprehension. Statistically significant difference were found on reading comprehension practice according to job. Conclusion: Although special education teachers and speech-language pathologists worked hard to teach ASD reading comprehension, they applied limited reading comprehension teaching methods. It will be considered systematically reading comprehension instruction to be trained by utilizing special school teacher training and applied for ASD.
