본 연구는 아동의 체벌 경험과 체벌에 대한 인식을 탐색하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 초점집단인터뷰를 통해 수집된 자료 중 질적 분석방법을 활용하여 3개 지역 3개 그룹의 17명 아동에게서 탐색된 체벌의 직·간접적 경험과 체벌에 대한 인식을 분석하였다. 분석결과, 아동의 체벌 경험과 인식은 총 4가지의 주제와 10가지의 하위 주제로 도출되었다. 도출된 4개의 주제 중 첫 번째는 ‘체벌이 경험되는 공간’으로, ‘개인 사정이라 다 말할 수 없는 공간, 가정’과 ‘체벌이 동의되고 묵인되는 공간, 학원’, ‘일부 선생님에 의한 위협 공간, 학교’의 세 개 하위 주제로 드러났다. 두 번째 주제는 ‘체벌의 경험 양상’으로, ‘어릴 때 더 잦고 점차 수위가 세지는 가정 체벌’과 ‘점차 격해지는 학원 체벌’이라는 두 가지의 하위 주제로 탐색되었다. 세 번째 주제는 ‘체벌 과정에서의 느낌’으로, ‘기분 나쁘고 자존심 상하는 가정 체벌’과 ‘점차 익숙해지는 학원 체벌’의 두 가지 하위 주제로 드러났다. 마지막으로 ‘체벌의 허용 공간과 체벌 인식’의 주제가 도출되었는데, 이 주제는 ‘체벌의 허용 공간: 애정과 사랑의 가정, 그리고 선택에 의한 학원’과 ‘미래의 체벌 가능성에 대한 의식’, ‘받아들여질 수 없는 체벌, 그리고 그 대안으로서의 대화’라는 세 가지 하위 주제를 통해 보다 구체적으로 드러났다. 본 연구는 이러한 분석결과를 토대로 아동의 체벌 경험과 인식에 대한 이해를 확장시키고 이에 관련한 실천적, 정책적 제언을 논하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore what circumstances a child experienced corporal punishment and how this direct and indirect experience led to an attitude toward corporal punishment. For this purpose, the focus group interviews was conducted in three regions nationwide for 17 children in two groups of elementary school 6 graders and one group of secondary school 2 graders. The data collected through interviews were derived from topics related to children's experience of direct and indirect corporal punishment and their perception of corporal punishment by utilizing and analyzing the method of subject analysis. As a result of the analysis, four topics and 10 sub-topics were derived. This study explored that within the various physical spaces in which children live, corporal punishment is conducted for the purpose of behavior correction or academic improvement, and that the experience of corporal punishment, especially at home, is understood as a love for children, leading to a favorable attitude toward corpoal punishment. Based on these findings, this study discussed practical and policy suggestions to enhance the presence of 'right to be free from punishment' in children's rights.
