Abstract

The purpose of this study is to verify the relationship between factors influencing career preparation of out-of-school youth and differences according to the period of school interruption. To this end, a survey was conducted on 410 youth using out-of-school youth support centers in 17 regions across the country, and the analysis method was verified through hierarchical regression analysis. The analysis results of this study showed that factors influencing career preparation differed depending on the period of interruption from school. In the group that dropped out of school for less than 1 year, lack of career information and lack of confidence were identified as the main influencing factors, in the group that dropped out for less than 2 years, lack of self-understanding was identified as the main influencing factor, and in the group that dropped out for 3 years or more, uncertainty about the future was identified as the main influencing factor. In particular, the longer the period of interruption from school, the more likely they were to perceive their future negatively. In addition, parental support and experiences of social discrimination had a significant impact on career preparation in all groups. Additionally, parental support and experiences of social discrimination commonly had a significant impact on career preparation in all groups. Over time, the tendency for social networks to shrink, dependence on parents to increase, and experiences of social discrimination were found to be factors that hinder career preparation. This study is significant in that it suggests practical intervention measures by revealing differences in career preparation according to the period of academic interruption.
