Abstract
A soundscape is the entirety of the auditory environment; understanding it requires simultaneous, contextual interpretation of spatial, physical, sound-type, and affective information. Yet these data are often separate, and visualizations emphasize physical acoustics, which hinders integrated interpretation. We propose a multilayered visualization integrating dispersed information. User Experience responses were evaluated across layer-composition conditions; we also assessed the usability of the integrated display and ran semi-structured interviews. Results show the sound-type layer anchors interpretation, spatial and physical layers provide context, and combining layers improved responses. In the fully integrated display, cognitive clarity(4.3±0.6), affect interpretation(4.0±0.5), and behavioral acceptance(4.5±0.5) were significantly higher than other conditions; participants nonetheless noted the need for a legend for affect markers. Findings indicate that multilayer integration supports comprehensive, consistent understanding of soundscapes and is practically applicable. Given the small sample, future work should include diverse users and validate with standardized legends.
