Abstract

This study explores how iteration occurs within data-driven UX design processes, focusing on when and why students revisit earlier stages during their projects. While traditional design processes emphasize iteration for refining solutions, the integration of data introduces distinct triggers and patterns of iteration that remain underexplored. To address this gap, the study qualitatively analyzed 45 student projects from four semesters of ‘UX Design Utilizing Data’ courses. Through content analysis, three categories of iterative activity were identified—Idea Divergent 1, Idea Divergent 2, and Idea Convergence—further divided into four specific types. These types reflect different motivations: discovering unexpected data, redefining analytical goals, recognizing inter-data relationships, and conducting further focused analysis. Based on these findings, the study proposes a revised instructional model that highlights the stages where iteration is most active and provides tailored pedagogical strategies. Supporting iterative thinking at these key stages can enhance students’ data literacy, creative reasoning, and problem-solving abilities. The results contribute to advancing UX design education by offering a framework for integrating data-driven iteration into the design curriculum.
