Abstract

In modern enlightenment period, many civil newspapers such as 『Dongnib Shinmun』, 『Maeil Shinmun』, 『Jeguk Shinmun』, and 『Daehan Maeil Shinbo』 published their first issues. The poems published on those modern newspapers were sorted and studies around 『Daehan Maeil Shinbo』. ‘Society and etc.’ section of 『Daehan Maeil Shinbo』 published enormous amount of verses and poems reaching 600 works, and most of them were resistance lyrics criticizing the contemporary situations. We cannot deny their values in poetry study in modern enlightenment period. However, they have limitation that they cannot include all over aspects of poems published on newspapers in the contemporary period, so it is needed to expand the scope. There were constant discussions on 43 poems classified as ‘Patriotic Poems’ published on 『Dongnib Shinmun』 and 41 modern verses published on 「Bogam 」 section of 『Gyeonghyang Shinmun』. However, poetry published on 『Hwangseong Shinmun』 have not been discussed in full scale. Accordingly, this article tried to identify the material status and investigated their characteristics in terms of form and content. Although the number of poetries can be changed according to the definition of the genre, according to the survey of the writer, the poems published on 『Hwangseong Shinmun』 were 31 excluding Sino-Korean poems. Most of the poems were collected by reporters of the paper or written by newspaper writer and editors so the writers are not known. One special fact to be noted is that most of poems were written after 1906, while 『Hwangseong Shinmun』 was published from 1898 to 1910. From the perspective of form, they were classified into three forms such as traditional rhythms of 3⋅4 or 4⋅4, song rhythms of 7⋅5 or 8⋅5, or modulation of rhythms. Most of them used traditional rhythms such as 3⋅4 or 4⋅4. From the perspective of contents, they could be classified as ‘Encouragement of Study and Patriotism’, ‘Desire for Civilization and Independence’, and ‘Criticism against Corruption of the Officers and Governmental Policies’. The characteristics of poetry published on 『Hwangseong Shinmun』 were not different from those of works published on 『Dongnib Shinmun』 and 『Daehan Maeil Shinbo』. 『Dongnib Shinmun』 showed the early forms of poetry in enlightenment period, and 『Daehan Maeil Shinbo』 published enormous volume of enlightenment verses through ‘Society and etc.’ after 1905. In other words, they had the form of late enlightenment period. On the other hand, poetries on 『Hwangseong Shinmun』 had a wide range from 1898 to 1910, from which we could see the aspects of poetries in pre-modern enlightenment period.
