Abstract

This thesis aims to questing the controversial meaning of 'the nation' in the field of Korean modern literature study, especially focusing on Kim Youn Sik's research on bilingual ecriture. In the Relations between Korean/Japanese Literature(1976), Kim Youn Sik set up the question of how to overcome the colonized unconscious from the necessity of establishing the national subject. Introducing the standpoint of 'modernity as the system', he related the post colonial task with another task of overcoming modernity. In the New Research on the Relations between Korean/Japanese Literature (2001) where he integrated the result of over 20 years, he raised Korean modern literary history from 'transplantation' to 'translation' by dialectic between 'ideality' and 'reality' and revealed the interdependent moments between the empire and colony. A series of the research on the bilingual ecriture including A Research on Korean Writers' Writing in Japanes at the End of the Colonial Era, described the inner landscape of the writers who had faced up to the problem of 'becoming the Japanese'. Kim suspended any moral judgment on them, seeing them from the tragic viewpoint as 'relativity of thoughts'. However, he also opens the possibility of re-relativizing 'relativity of thoughts' by paying attention to the 'time difference', different 'forms of writings' and 'the Real' and his research on the bilingual ecriture is still ethical in that he never abandons the quest of the ethics of himself as an interpreter. The compound task of overcoming colonialism/modernism/nationalism leaves an aporia of "If the nation is only an imagined community, how can we justify the demand for independence of the colony? Though Kim doesn't offer an easy solution, his thought, which has persistently kept going around the question itself, has become deeper.
