Abstract
This article deals with the residential situation of Koreans living in the West Kando in early 20th century through the Census Register. In the late 17th century Q’ing government designated its own birthplace, North-east Manchu as the forbidden district and forbade other tribes to live there, the policy that was called "Ponggŭm [Seclusion and Prohibition]". The Chosun government did not permit Koreans to cross the Yalu and Tuman River to secretly enter and stay as well, the policy that was called "Wŏlgang gŭmji [No Cross the River]" policy. As the above mentioned policies were abolished in the late 19th century, many Koreans moved to Kando which were composed of Western and Eastern part, corresponding to the areas across the Yalu and Tuman River each. Most Korean immigrants came from North Pyŏngan and North Hamgŏyng Province. Therefore, the reason of Korean immigration was to cultivate new lands for the living. Through the analysis of the census register, I found following information about the West Kando Koreans in the early 20th century. 1) Average household member was very few like 2.4 persons. It seems that the non-marital women were not registered, therefore, the sexual ratio was uneven: 1.625 male versus 1 female. 2) The family type having only husband and wife was the half of the whole numbers like 45% while single household was also 16%; both two types were 60% of the whole population. 3) Almost all the occupation, 98% was agriculture, the fact that shows that most Korean immigrants came to the region for land cultivation and tenancy. There are some people who participated in education, translation, document writing agency, ritual ceremony and fortune-telling, commerce. It means that the West Kando Korean society shows somewhat 'sedentary' aspect. 4) All the residential building type was a thatched cottage. The rent type was almost half of the population, 45 %. The size of the house was mostly 3 kan: 60 % of the whole houses, Holding (32%) and Rent (28%) each.
