16~17세기에 해로를 통해 조선을 찾은 유럽인들은 일본군을 따라오거나 자신의 의지와는 상관없이 표착으로 인해 조선에 오게 된 이들이 대부분이었다. 하지만 북서 항로를 찾아 나섰던 유럽인들이 18세기 말에 들어서면서 일본 이외의 지역을 통상지로 개척하려는 구체적인 목적을 가지고 북태평양과 조선 근해의 바다에 관심을 갖게 되었다. 논문은 18세기 말 동해안을 항해한 프랑스의 라 페루즈 원정대와 부산의 용당포에 기착하여 조선인들과 접촉한 영국의 브로튼, 그리고 1816년 중국을 출발하여 황해안을 탐사하며 조선인들과 만났던 바질 홀 등 항해자들의 탐험과 기록을 살펴보려고 한다. 이들은 이전의 항해기를 지침 삼아 동북아시아 해역을 측량하고 현지인들의 언어와 풍속을 기록함으로써 이후에 찾아올 방문자들에게 도움을 주려고 하였다. 19세기 중반 이후 아편전쟁으로 중국이 몰락하면서 항해자들이 남긴 과학 탐사의 기록을 바탕으로 조선을 찾은 유럽인들의 수는 늘어났고, 이들은 적극적으로 통상을 요구하며 군사적 갈등을 일으켰고 본격적으로 조선의 개항을 요구하게 되었다. 그러므로 19세기 후반 유럽인들이 조선의 문호 개방과 통상을 요구했던 이면에는 18세기 말과 19세기 초에 걸쳐 이루어졌던 항해자들의 조선과 근해 탐사와 그 기록이 영향을 끼친 것이 분명하다.
Abstract
Most of the European visitors who went to Joseon by sea in the 16th and 17th centuries were either a missionary who belonged to the Japanese army or drifters or castaways who drifted to the coast of Joseon. However, toward the end of the 18th century France and United Kingdom made their way to Asia and the Northeast Pacific, trying to find the Northwest Passage as well as new trading points in the region. The article mainly focuses on the expeditions of three figures, who left their marks on the exploratory history of the Northeast Pacific and Joseon:Two explorers of the late 18th century, La Pérouse and William Broughton and the early 19th century British explorer Basil Hall. During the voyages along the seas of Joseon, they accumulated scientific data of unknown waters as well as information on the places to serve as trading points in the future. When China rapidly began to lose its control over Asia after the Opium Wars, Joseon faced the outright demand for trade with Europeans. Therefore it is certain that the exploratory voyages of the late 18th and early 19th centuries helped to benefit later explorers’ interests.
