18세기 말부터 영국을 비롯한 서양의 선박들이 천체 관측과 지도 제작, 교역선을 위한 수로 개척, 국제 정세 변화에 대응할 교두보 확보 등의 목적으로 조선을 찾아왔고 해도와 기록을 남겼다. 19세기 중반이 되면 남해와 제주도, 동해, 황해 등 전 해역에 대한 서양의 조선 탐사가 어느 정도 마무리되었다고 할 수 있다. 하지만 영국 해군의 탐사 활동은 19세기 말까지 계속되었고, 영국의 대러시아 정책의 일환으로 발생한 1885년 거문도 사건으로 절정에 이른다. 논문은 영국 해군 소속의 에드워드 벨처(Edward Belcher, 1799-1877) 함장이 남긴 기록과 해도를 중심으로 하여 1845년의 제주도와 거문도 인근 해역을 탐사 활동을 살펴보고자 한다.
Abstract
Since the late 18th century, ships from western countries, including British, visited Joseon for the purposes of observing astronomical objects, making maps, developing waterways for trade ships, and securing a bridgehead to respond to changes in the international situation, and left charts and records. By the mid-19th century, exploration of the South Sea, the East Sea, the Yellow Sea and Jeju Island by British navy vessels was completed. However, the British Navy's exploration activities continued until the end of the 19th century, reaching a peak with the Geomundo Incident in 1885, which occurred as part of Britain's policy toward Russia. This paper examines the activities of Captain Edward Belcher (1799-1877) of the British Navy, who explored the waters around Jeju Island and Geomun Island in 1845, based on the records and charts left by him.
