Abstract
This study explores the earliest accounts (roughly from 16th century to 18th century) of Jesuit missionaries on Korea and Japan in order to understand the western view of East Asia before the 18th century. The Jesuit missionaries who came to East Asia were at the frontline of cultural contacts, clashes and efforts to transcend cross-cultural misunderstanding between East and West. More often than not westerners accounts were unreliable due to its biased view of the East as known as Orientalism in which westerners consider non-western cultures as the “others.” However, since the earliest Jesuit missionaries adopted a policy of cultural “accommodation,” Jesuit missionaries accounts were relatively accurate and non-biased in processing various kinds of social and cultural information on East Asia. Thus, Jesuit accounts contains valuable information that demonstrates how people in East Asia were depicted and understood. In this paper, I particularly concentrate on Jesuit accounts of Korea and Japan in a comparative way. ironically, Hideyoshi invasion was Jesuits’ first encounter with Korea. The first Jesuit missionary to set foot on Korean soil was the Spanish Jesuit Father Gregorio de Céspedes, who came with Hideyosh invasion of Korea. While living in Korea, Céspedes sent out reports on Korea and its culture to western readers. Moreover, the work of Père Jean-Baptiste du Halde, which was written in China, influenced Korea’s image which the European intelligentsia had. On the other hand, Japan was known to European readers through the reports of Jesuit missionaries who arrived in Japan as early as 1549 in Japan while the information of Korea was made known to European readers through the reports of Jesuit missionaries in Japan and China. The work of Alessandro Valignano, including letters and treatises, contained detailed information on a very closed observation of Japan. By examining Jesuit missionaries accounts, I attempt to depict the earliest known images of Korea and Japan.
