Abstract
The Joseon Dynasty’s system of family registration and household census can be described as well organized. The Joseon Dynasty conducted household surveys under the family registration system for five hundred years and compiled family registers as a result. From the founding of the country in 1392 until 1895, the family registry was conducted every three years, and from 1896, the family registry system was changed to a one-year cycle. The Joseon Dynasty had more than 300 counties nationwide, and since family registers were compiled by county (郡) or subcounty (面), and three or four copies were compiled at a time, it is calculated that a considerable amount of family registers were compiled for more than 500 years. However, it is estimated that there are only about 1,000 family registers from the Joseon Dynasty left in South Korea and foreign countries. On the other hand, the situation is different for family registers created after 1896 (new-type family registers “新式戶籍”), but the family registers created before that time (older-type family registers “舊式戶籍”) were concentrated in Gyeongsang Province (慶尙道) and Jeju Island (濟州島), and the research was bound to focus on these regions. Due to these circumstances, it can be evaluated that the family registers of some remaining North Korean regions have not been properly organized and researched. Currently, there are 40 family registers in Korea, Japan, and the United States (University of Hawaii) that were created during the Joseon Dynasty, including 4 older-type family registers and 36 new-type family registers. By province, there are 2 counties in Gyeonggi Province (京畿道), 4 counties in Gangwon Province (江原道), 6 counties in Hwanghae Province (黃海道), 5 counties in South Pyeongan Province (平安南道), 6 counties in North Phyongan Province (平安北道), 3 counties in South Hamgyong Province (咸鏡南道), and 2 counties in North Hamgyong Province (咸鏡北道), totaling 28 counties (4 counties with older-type family registers, 25 counties with new-type family registers, and 1 county with overlapping older and new type family register). This paper aims to comprehensively organize and introduce the surviving family registers of the North Korean region. It will also emphasize that family registers are the best source for collective research on people groups. It is hoped that this paper will be an important motive in building a foundation for collective biography studies in the North Korean region.
