Abstract
The Effects of Monetary Policy on Financial Asset Prices: The Case of Korea Keun Yeong Lee Abstract The paper measures the response of asset prices to changes in monetary policy, using instrumental variables (IV) approach and generalized method of moments (GMM) which are based on heteroskedasticity. The empirical results show that domestic stock prices and won/dollar exchange rates react insignificantly to changes in the call rate target. According to GMM estimation results, a 25 basis point increase in the call rate target leads to a 15 basis point increase in the yield on monetary stabilization bond (364 days), a 7.5 basis point increase in the yield on corporate bond (3 years), and a 5.3 basis point increase in the yield on treasury bond (3 years), respectively. It also increases the yields on CD (91 days) and CP (91 days) by 2.5 basis points. In contrast, the yields on MMF (7 days) and CMA (180 days) change little or not at all. JEL Classification: E4, E5, G1 Key Words: monetary policy, stock market, event study, heteroskedasticity
