Abstract

This article studies the process in which comics, which acquired the status of ‘mass communication’ worldwide after World War II, functioned as Cold War culture in 1950s Korea and transmitted Cold War discourse and perception of the world to the public through KIM Yong Hwan’s comics. Comics began to emerge as a major popular culture medium as the mass reproduction and mass distribution of newspapers and magazines became possible based on the capital of the media industry, and they were used as propaganda in the front and rear during both World Wars. Comics, which were used as a communication tool through the nonverbal expressions of comics symbols under the Cold War system, are a medium with important value as visual material in the study of Cold War culture. In Korea, comics, which began to grow centered around daily newspapers, played an important role as a media on the Korean Peninsula, which became an arena for psychological warfare between the great powers during the Pacific War, liberation, and the Korean War. KIM Yong Hwan’s cartoons, which show the characteristics of cartoons that can transcend nationality and language, and depict personal experiences such as his participation in psychological warfare and his trip to the United States with the support of aid agencies, are suitable for examining Korean cartoons in the 1950s as a global Cold War culture. To this end, by focusing on the political cartoons and the serial cartoon Kochubu that KIM Yong Hwan published in the English newspaper The Korean Republic, this study organizes the status and role of newspapers as media after the Korean War and discusses the position and meaning of newspaper cartoons. Furthermore, by tracing the process in which KIM Yong Hwan’s personal experiences and style simultaneously acquired regional characteristics of Korea and global universality, this study reveals the role and position of Korean cartoons that functioned as a Cold War culture.
