Abstract
This paper examines how Yang Gisonjeon, written in the late Joseon Dynasty, intertwines family issues with gender consciousness, proposing “motherhood” as a key gender role for resolving domestic conflicts. Through the contrasting characters of Yang Gison and Han Giyeon, the novel constructs a narrative around the patriarch’s choice between a wife’s virtue and beauty. Yang Gison, who prioritizes physical beauty, abandons his virtuous wife for a concubine, leading to familial discord, financial hardship, and delayed marriages for his children. In contrast, Han Giyeon chooses a virtuous woman as his second wife, maintaining household harmony. The novel critiques the patriarchal gender perception that values beauty over virtue, presenting it as the root of family problems. It advocates for a shift in patriarchal values toward the pursuit of virtue in women. Additionally, Yang Gisonjeon questions Confucian gender norms through the portrayal of the discarded wife, Lady Yi, whose unappealing appearance and resentment toward her husband and concubine challenge conventional ideals of womanhood. As a resolution to the familial crises caused by an immoral patriarch, the novel presents motherhood as a constructive gender role. Lady Yi actively performs maternal duties in the absence of the patriarch, thereby sustaining the family. The concubine Chae-ran assumes the role of stepmother and contributes to domestic harmony by raising the legitimate children. The secondwife, Lady Yang, nurtures her stepchildren with maternal affection, helping to repair the fragmented family structure. Yang Gisonjeon holds significance as a domestic novel that narrativizes the gender roles and perspectives necessary for family preservation and harmony. It offers an integrative approach to the issues of concubinage and stepmotherhood, while also providing a realistic alternative to the problems and solutions traditionally portrayed in earlier domestic fiction.
