본 연구는 공동연구개발(R&D cooperation) 파트너 선택 전략이 기업의 기술혁신 성과에 미치는 효과를 분석하여 파트너 사이의 보완성(complementarity) 또는 대체성(substitutability) 여부를 검증한다. 2008년도 기술혁신조사 제조업 기업자료를 이용한 실증분석 결과는 수요 및 공급관련 수직기업과 대학을 포함한 연구기관 모두와 공동연구개발을 실시할 경우 각각을 따로 수행할 때보다 그 효과가 작아지는 대체성이 존재함을 보여준다. 또한 연구개발 파트너간의 대체성은 제품 및 공정혁신 모두에서 나타났다. 이러한 대체성결과는 표본의 대부분을 차지하는 중소기업의 경우 다수의 공동연구개발 파트너를 통한 시너지 효과보다는 파트너 수의 증가에 따른 관리의 어려움 등으로 인한 비효율성이 오히려 클 수 있음을 보여준다.
Abstract
This paper tests whether different pairs of R&D partnerships are complementary or substitutable in improving firms’ performance. Using data on manufacturing firms in the 2008 Korea Innovation Survey, we find that firms with multiple R&D partners of vertical firms(clients and suppliers) and research institutes(universities and other research institutes) show lower performance than those with a single partner. The results indicate substitutability in R&D cooperation strategies, which is found for both product and process innovations. Evidence suggests that inefficiency due to difficulties in managing multiple partners might be greater for firms, in particular small and medium sized firms, than synergetic effects of multiple partnerships.
