Abstract

Collaborative R&D is the one of the major styles to implement interfirm collaboration. Abundant studies have explored the factors influencing the success and choice of firm’s collaborative behaviors. But prior studies relatively gave little attention to the influence of subject firm’s characteristics who decides the R&D as a collaborative method. Because the collaborative R&D is a risk-taking behavior requiring amount of resources, the motive and capability of subject firm may influence the result of this decision making. The empirical study using the data of 2,352 innovating firms suggests the firms with 1)strategic intention to innovate standardized product, 2)high use of social interaction for information acquisition, 3)low use of codified knowledge for information acquisition, and 4)high use of formal institution for knowledge protection are positively related with implementation of collaborative R&D. This study can provide the new perspective for analyzing decision making process of interfirm collaborations.
