본 연구는 부모의 사교육동기를 분석한다. 먼저 부모와 자녀 간의 증여를 설명하는 이론모형으로 자녀의 수와 성적이 부모의 동기에 따라 그들의 사교육비 결정에 상이하게 반영됨을 보였으며, 이를 바탕으로 실증모형의 추정결과를 분석하였다. 추정에는 한국청소년패널조사를 이용하였으며 부모의 유동성제약을 고려하였다. 분석결과는 부모의 동기가 투자와 이타심뿐만 아니라 소비를 포함하며, 각 동기의 비중은 그들의 소득에 따라 달라지는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 부모의 동기를 보다 다각적으로 분석해야 할 필요성과 부모의 소득이 기존 연구를 통해 알려진 것보다 중요한 사교육수요의 결정요인임을 시사한다.
Abstract
This paper studies the parental motive for their children’s private education. The key hypothesis of this paper is that parents acquire utility from educating their children in the same way as they do from consuming normal goods. This paper constructs a two-period theoretical model that explains the intergenerational transfer between parents and their children. This paper analyzes the estimate results from the Korea Youth Panel Survey based on the model results and concludes that the parental motive includes investment, altruism, and consumption. Furthermore, this paper infers that the proportion of each motive depends on parents’ income.
