세계지리는 세계지리 다워야 한다는 사회와 교육계의 요청이 있다. 과목 이름만 세계지리일 뿐 대부분 계통지리적 접근으로 구성되어 있는 기존 세계지리 과목의 내용 체계를 우회적으로 비판하는 것이고, 다른 한편으로는 단편적 사실과 정보들의 나열적 구성을 지양하라는 요구인 것이다. 이에 응하기 위해서는 무엇보다 세계지리 과목에서 ‘지역’을 부활시켜야 한다. 다만, 그러한 지역의 부활이 수많은 지리 정보의 부활로 잘못 해석되어서는 곤란하다. 세계지리를 학습하기 위한 전통적 접근은 세계를 대지역 스케일의 여러 권역들로 나누어 살펴보는 것이다. 권역이란 세계를 대지역으로 나눈 일종의 지역 개념이다. 지역지리학자들의 최근 연구를 수용하면, 지역은 인간 삶의 단순한 물리적 용기가 아니라 역사적, 사회적 구성물이고, 인위적 산물에 불과한 것이 아니라 오히려 역사와 사회의 동인이기도 하며, 명확한 경계를 가진 고정적 실체이기보다는 인접한 다른 지역과의 상호 작용 속에서 지속적으로 변동을 겪는 그런 공간이다. 따라서, 세계지리에서 지역 개념을 부활시키기 위해서는 권역을 이해함에 있어서 학습자로 하여금 권역의 본질과 성격, 심지어 존재 자체에 대해 끊임없이 의심하고 탐구하도록 하는 것이 중요하다. 이러한 문제의식에서 본 연구는 세계지리 과목의 권역 구분 방식과 내용 체계의 개선 방안을 구상하였다. 먼저 메타지역으로서의 권역 개념이 갖는 교육적 의미와 개념적 한계를 검토하였고, 다음으로 국내외 세계지리 과목의 내용 체계와 특징을 살펴보았다. 그리고 이 두 가지 논의를 바탕으로, 권역 구분과 내용 체계의 개선을 위한 쟁점을 네 가지로 나누어 도출한 다음, 이에 상응하여 개선 방안을 크게 세 가지 측면에서 제안하였다. 권역 구분의 준거, 세계의 주요 권역 구분 및 전개 방안, 계통적 접근과 지역적 접근의 비중 및 권역별 하위 내용의 구성 방안이 그것이다.
Abstract
Recently, there are calls for world regional geography subject in the right way. They criticize that world regional geography subject in high school virtually consists of thematic approach rather than regional approach, and that world regional geography subject should take cautions against fact-exhibition or information-display. To meet these critics, it is necessary to return the concept of 'region' to world regional geography subject. A traditional approach to world regional geography subject is a regional one which divides world into several realms for teaching, learning, and understanding world more effectively. Realm is a sort of region, ie major region. According to recent studies by some regional geographers, a region is thought as historically contingent process and social construct rather than physical container, as agent which shapes human lives and histories rather than product, and dynamic space which interacts with other regions. Therefore, to return 'region' to world regional geography subject, it is important that world regional geography subject makes student to inquire the nature of realms, to think critically the realm schema of predominant position, and to question the concept of realm itself. From these perspectives, the author proposes realm-division framework and content standards for teaching world regional geography as followings. First point is pedagogic significance and conceptual limit of realm as a metaregion. Second point is the existing content standards and characteristics of world regional geography subject at home and abroad. On the basis of these two points, third one is a reform program about the realm-division format and content standards of world regional geography subject in criteria of realm-division, new format of division, and thematic vs. regional construction and subordinate composition.
