Abstract
This study examined the determinants that affect divorce by conducting Cox proportional hazards survival analysis on 1,516 dual-income wage worker couples who married after 1970. We use the Korea Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) from 1998 (first wave) to 2021 (twenty-fourth wave) and the Korean Working Conditions Survey (KWCS) from 2006 (first wave) to 2020 (sixth wave). We find that husband’s working hours, overtime work, and full-time work, and wife’s working hours are statistically significant on their divorce. When husband’s average working hours per week increase by 1 hour, the probability of divorce increases by about 5.8%. Likewise, when wife’s average working hours per week increase by 1 hour, the probability of divorce increases by about 6.4%. We obtain consistent results with the sample including the self-employed. These results suggest that long working hours in Korea are related to the divorce rate.
