외국인 유학생의 자국 취업이행에 관한 사례연구

한국 사회는 급격한 학령인구 감소와 지방소멸이라는 위기에 대응하여 외국인 유학생을 적극 유치하고자 하는 제도와 정책적 노력을 확대하고 있다. 그럼에도 졸업 이후 한국사회에서 진로를 이어가는 외국인 유학생은 현저하게 낮은 비율을 유지하고 있다. 이를 위해서는 자국에서 취업을 이행하는 외국인 유학생에 대한 이해가 필요하다. 이 문제의식을 위해 자국으로 돌아가 취업을 이행한 “자수”의 특성을 사례연구로 확인하고자 한다. 사례연구는 특정한 사례의 범주와 특성을 밝히는 사례만들기(casing)를 수행한다. 이러한 특성을 가진 사례연구는 아직은 미진한 자국으로 취업을 이행한 외국인 유학생 연구의 확장을 위한 주제의 범주와 특성을 제시하며 해당 주제에 대한 논의의 장을 마련한다. 자수의 사례를 통해 본 연구는 세 가지 특성을 발견한다. 첫째, 유학 이후 진로에 대한 동기는 유학 전부터 형성되며, 둘째, 유학생활은 한국사회 진입의 어려움을 확인해 주는 경험이 되어 유학 전 자국에서 설정된 진로를 우선하여 탐색하도록 한다. 셋째, 그럼에도 자수가 확보한 학술적 연대를 통해 외국인 유학생의 관계적 한계가 자국 복귀의 결정적 이유는 아닐 수 있음을 시사한다. 본 연구는 자수의 사례적 특성을 통해 유학 이전 진로 탐색의 과정과 한국사회 진입을 장기적인 맥락에서 연구해 나갈 것을 제안한다.
Abstract
In response to the challenges posed by a rapidly declining school-age population and the risk of regional extinction, South Korea has expanded institutional efforts to attract international students. Nevertheless, the proportion of international students who pursue their careers in Korea after graduation remains remarkably low. To address this issue, it is essential to understand the experiences of those who return to their home countries for employment. Specifically this study explores the characteristics of an international student, “Jasu,” who returned to her home country for employment. This study identifies three key characteristics: First, motivations for post-study career paths are often formed prior to studying abroad. Second, the study abroad experience, marked by difficulties in Korean society, reinforces the prioritization of career pathways initially envisioned in the home country. Third, despite challenges, the academic networks Jasu established in Korea suggest that relational limitations are not necessarily the decisive factor in returning home. This study proposes that future research should examine pre-study career exploration and the long-term context of international students reflected by characteristics of Jasu’s experience.
