지방대학 대학원 외국인 유학생의 졸업 후 진로 결정과 주요 요인에 대한 탐색적 연구

이 연구는 한국 지방대학 대학원에 재학 중이거나 졸업한 아시아 국가 출신 유학생의 졸업 후 진로에 관한 연구로 한국 체류, 본국 귀환, 제3국 이주의 선택지 가운데 어떤 선택을 하게 되는지, 그리고 이런 선택에 영향을 주는 요인은 무엇인지 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 총 12명의 유학생과 진행한 심층 면담 결과를 토대로 이 연구는 이들의 진로를 결정짓는 중요한 요소로 한국어 자본에 주목하고, 이들의 전공을 비롯한 학력자 본, 출신국 배경 등이 한국어 능력과 교차하면서 진로에 영향을 준다는 점을 밝힌다. 예를 들어 한국어 숙련도를 갖춘 인문사회계 유학생들은 자신의 전공과 관련 없는 통번역 업무 등에 종사하게 되는 반면, 이공계 학생들은 전공 관련 취업이 가능하기는 하지만 부족한 한국어 실력 때문에 한국에서의 취업과 정착이 쉽지 않고 영어 실력과 영미권 문화에의 친숙도가 높지 않은 이상 제3국으로의 재이주도 선택하기 어렵다. 이 연구를 통해 많은 국가들이 자국의 언어와 문화를 고등교육을 통해 습득한 유학생을 고급 인력으로 인지하여 우호적인 비자정책을 펼치고 있는 이때, 한국 정부의 이주이민정책에도 시사점을 제시하고자 한다.
Abstract
This paper studies post-graduation plan/life of Asian graduate students in Korean provincial universities. It aims to reveal the important factors which affect post-graduation mobility. Drawing on the interviews with twelve students, we show that post-graduation mobility should be understood at the crossroad of language skills, academic capital such as major, and their country of origin. Students in humanities and social science tend to have advanced Korean language skills, based on which they are likely to find jobs. On the other hand, students in science and engineering have more chances to find major-related jobs in Korea, but it is hard to settle down in Korea due to their lack of Korean language skills. In addition, re-migration to the third country is not an easy option unless they have enough linguistic and cultural knowledge needed. This research suggests policy implications to the Korean government, when many countries try to utilize international students as skilled migrants.
