Abstract
Can I be called a feminist although I am devoting to the duration of the capitalist-patriarchy as well as letting it go by struggling to perform the multiple role-play, if not perfectly, as a married woman living in the plain patriarchal society from all the standpoint of law, constitute, convention, culture? However, It is impossible to deny that different selves live just next to the self conducive to the patriarchy and that they feel the everyday patriarchal oppression sensitively, dreaming the emancipation out of it. My passion to the equal chances and constitutional equality about twenty years ago coheres with the aim of liberalist feminism. It is almost natural that marxism attracted what I was at that time of a university student. Marriage is the opportunity for Korean women to face the reality of patriarchy, judging from not only my personal experience but also almost every woman's. Thanks to the encounter with such an attribute of the marriage-system, I would recognize the feminity which I had exerted to erase consciously and unconsciously. It is the time when I acknowledged the sexual difference as an important one of all the differences incarnated in my body and mind through the communication with female friends and pregnancy and child-birth. But I cannot help suspecting that cultural feminism walks a tight rope between the boundary of radical feminism and anti-feminism. If my proud feminity is to entangle me with the fetters, what shall I do? The insight of the post-feminism glows here that "feminine" with single meaning cannot exist. If so, feminism cannot be one, too. Because Korean society is hybrid one which is mingled with pre-modern, modern, and post-modern aspects, Korean female identity is also unable to define to unity. Still, I am drifting in the middle of 'enormous diversity and simple similarity'. An exit that I found is the reserve of power with which our mother-women survived the misogynous modern times. The vital emergy is so strong and sticky that our woman-people could protect the place of life and manage the life-keeping labor when man was immersed in the gigantic discourse. Although we should criticize that self-sacrificial vital energies resulted in the devotion to the patriarchal home and family, I think the refined daughters must not de separated from these mothers. Isn't it necessary the attitude that will never withdraw "critical negotiation" than overthrow and separation, neglect and contempt, for our mothers' energies which have used to protect their home and family to be freed towards the world? Through that slow but never stopped "critical negotiation", 'diverse' feminism must be aligned. In this era of 21st technology-science, such an alignment now transform the category of traditional 'human being'.
