Abstract
This thesis analyzed the feminine symbols appeared in the poetry of Kim Soo-yeong and Shin Dong-yeop to examine the correlation among the revolution, tradition, and femininity in the 1960s. In the revolutionary poetry of these two typical participatory poets in the 1960s, women exist as very important symbols. Kim Soo-yeong appears to guard against women by using belittling expression for women, but in fact, for him, wife is ‘beloved enemy’ who is “good’ existence that experiments the evil of literature and make one realize one’s own hypocrisy. Also wife and housemaid Soon-ja who do not know hypocrisy and are symbols of pure intuition that does not cut out the object. Through the existence of these, Kim Soo-young realizes the order of Great nature that is “devastatingly simple.’ He sublimates this into poetic realm after realizing that such a simple chaotic movement of nature is the truth of revolution. In this process, women are ‘numerous reactions’ for him and make him recognize ‘great root’ and remember history. For him, Women are nearest to Nature that is the realm of revolution, poetic being itself. Shin Dong-yeop presents maternal utopia as an alternative of the failed revolutionary future. This is formed as a backlash to the masculine modern age in which imperialism, nationalism, war, and violence that are conducted by the Western rationality. Such maternity appears as Baekjae, a spatial symbol of ordeal and resurrection, and is also presented as a sacred being that will sublimate the violent masculinity. For him, being feminine (maternity) is a symbol of utopian tradition that this nation should achieve. For these typical revolutionary poets, ‘femininity’ is a medium that brings many enlightenments that make him reach the revolutionary realm in theirpoetry and is also messianic being that reveals the revolutionary future. It exists as a revolutionary poetic embodiment. This starts with the skepticism about the planning of the male-dominated modern age and the planning of the nations. Disillusion of the planning of the modernization that is conducted on a nation basis was placed in their minds. So femininity is bound to be required as an antithesis to the masculinity referred to as nationalism. Also in their discussion in which revolution and femininity are connected, the concept of ‘tradition’ enters. This is an ideological body of the new community that the intellectuals in the 1960s had to establish in order to fight against the nationalistic planning and is brought about from the appropriateness at that time when they had to establish a revolutionary ‘tradition’ that was different from them. Of course, for them, ‘tradition’ has a place that is different from the tradition in the general sense. For them, the tradition is something revolutionary, and a gift of time reserved for the future, that is composed under the mysterious and marvelous luster. Sanctifying such a tradition was, in a sense, brought about by impossibility of the planning of rational utopia. Utopia that appeared in the era when it was not possible to imagine any logical and ideological image of society except the concept of state-led democracy is bound to be nothing other than something aesthetic, mysterious, of the past, transcendental, and sacred. The fact that revolutionary intellectuals and poets monopolized ‘femininity’ is based on such circumstances. It is because women are what is mysterious, of the past, and transcendental that resists the masculinity of nationalism that advocates what is logical and authoritative. So the 1960s is the era when femininity emerged as what is poetic, the truth, or sacred.
