Abstract
Over the past 30 years, the redress movement for the Japanese military “comfort women” has made the comfort women’s memory as a part of global memory culture beyond historical issues between Korea and Japan or wartime sex crimes by Japanese empire. The victims’ memory and testimony are being represented more actively than ever, as the intergovernmental 2015 Japan-South Korea Comfort Women Agreement, which excluded the victims, rather reinvigorates the redress movement seeking historical justice and concentrates the potency of those against sexual exploitation and gender violence. Can the comfort women now be called speaking subalterns? As the movement became institutionalized, the hierarchy of representation that determines whose memories can be considered universal came into play. In addition, while the intellectuals “translate” comfort women’s individual multi-layered experiences into public testimony, their representation can be distorted and their voices can only be heard within the public venues. This paper examines the changes in the memory works by the generation of postmemory since the 2015 agreement and analyzes how they try to go beyond the hierarchy of representation and the aporia of testimony by imagining invisible witnesses, untypical victims, and their untold testimony.
