본 연구는 신경숙 문학이 ‘내면성’이라는 키워드를 중심으로 1990년대 한국문학의 대표작으로 독해되는 상황을 비판적으로 검토하고, 그동안 ‘1990년대적인 것’이라는 기준이 충분히 설명하지 못했던 신경숙의 초기 문제의식을 면밀히 살피고자 한다. 본고는 신경숙의 등단작부터 1990년대 중반의 작품에 나타난 문제의식들이 ‘다시 쓰기’의 방식을 통해 문학이 ‘1980년대’라는 시대를 어떻게 기억해야 하는가에 대한 화두로 연결 및 확장되고 있음을 분석한다. 다시 쓰기의 관점에서 볼 때, 신경숙의 초기 문학세계는 1990년대 신경숙의 문학이 비단 ‘1990년대적인 것’만으로는 구성될 수 없음을, 다시 말해 그동안 1990년대적인 것으로 일컬어졌던 신경숙 문학의 특징들이 1980년대와 1990년대 사이에서 치열하게 길항하는 과정에서 만들어졌음을 알 수 있다. 이러한 과정을 통해 신경숙 초기작은 1980년대와 1990년대 한국문학의 의미를 양방향에서 풍부하게 성찰하도록 하는 독특한 문학적 성취를 보여주었다.
Abstract
This study critically investigates the discursive framework in which Shin Kyung-sook’s literature has been positioned as representative of 1990s Korean literature, with par- ticular emphasis on the conceptual lens of “inner nature, ” and offers a comprehensive analysis of her early thematic concerns, which the conventional “1990s” framework has failed to fully address. This study argues that the sense of critical awareness found in Shin Kyung-sook’s early works is closely connected to, and further developed through, the theme of how to remember the literary era of the 1980s by means of “ re- writing.” From this perspective, her early literary works show that her so-called “1990s literature” cannot be understood solely as a product of that decade. The characteristics attributed to her writing are instead the result of a dialectical engagement between the 1980s and the 1990s. In this way, Shin Kyung-sook’s early works—when considered in conjunction with her later literature—offer a unique literary achievement, reflecting deeply on the meanings of Korean literature in both the 1980s and the 1990s.
