Abstract

Shin Il-seon (申一仙; 1912-1990) stands as one of the pioneering actresses in early Korean cinema, achieving widespread public acclaim at the age of 15 with her debut in Arirang (Na Un-gyu, 1926), a film that earned her the epithet “Joseon’s Sweetheart.” Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, she emerged as a key figure in the nascent cultural industries of Joseon, including cinema, broadcasting, and theater. However, her career was marked by a series of abrupt retirements, first following her marriage in 1927, then again in 1938 after financial hardships led her to become a gisaeng. After Korea’s liberation, she contributed to the posthumous canonization of Arirang and its director, Na Un-gyu. Despite her prominence, scholarly attention to Shin Il-seon has been scant, with even basic biographical details yet to be compiled. This paper seeks to reconstruct the multifaceted career of Shin Il-seon, who ap- peared in ten extant films, including When the Sun Rises (Sim Hoon, 1927), Arirang 3 (Na Un-gyu, 1936), and Crossroads of Youth (Ahn Jong-hwa, 1934). In addition to her filmography, Shin was involved in drama albums, radio plays, and stage productions. This study also explores her involvement in the creation of “actual performance[實演]” photographs, alongside her work in film novels and scenarios, from People in White (Lee Gyeong-son, 1927) to A Chapter for Gisaeng: Sad Night (Park Gi-chae, 1937). By reevaluat- ing these lesser-known facets of her career, this paper aims to illuminate the complex- ities of Shin Il-seon’s legacy, offering a critical analysis of how her persona as both an actress and a star shaped early Korean cinema and popular culture.
