Abstract
In this article, I looked into the characteristics and functions of medical interview and the problems in the current practice of medical interviewing. I also analyzed the factors that preclude a good medical interview. Medical interview differs from the general interview in terms of the communication goals for the interviewee, the relationships between the participants, a situation of limited time and the need to questioning for the interviewee. Theoretically, it is regarded that the medical interview should meet three functions of forming a doctor-patient relationship, of evaluating the patient's problems, and finally, of treating the patient's problems. However, analysis of the current practice of medical interviewing showed that these three functions are not fulfilled adequately. These problems can be attributed to the structural issues of the current health care system, lack of communication skills of doctors, lack of recognition for the patients' right, doctor's view to the communication itself and the purpose of communication. Structural issues of the health care system is an external part which is not easily changed, but other internal factors for the doctors could be supplemented by understanding of the characteristics of medical interview, change their views to the patients, and improving their communications skill through education about medical interview. If doctors discard their sense of dignity and, instead, respect the patients' right and look on the medical interview in the patients' stand point, they could communicate with improved satisfaction and compliance of the patients.
