Abstract
Studies on conjunctive adverbs have grammatically defined their part of speech and focused on their function as conjunction between two sentences but not investigated their discourse functions in spoken Korean yet. This study investigates discourse functions of conjunctive adverbs, considering their characteristics in spoken Korean. Conjunctive adverbs are frequently used like interjections when any suitable words are not found or to link two sentences in spoken Korean. In written Korean, conjunctive adverbs commonly appear at the beginning of a sentence but in spoken Korean they appear more freely:they are placed in the middle or at the end of a sentence. When ‘geureo-pattern’ is used as a conjunctive adverb or a discourse marker, it has the basic function of linking and thus it is hard to claim that the discourse marker lost the original meaning of its lexicon. However, conjunctive adverbs in spoken Korean, which do not appear in written forms, have the functions of discourse markers: adverbs in spoken Korean, which do not appear in written forms, have the functions of discourse markers:getting the floor, holding the floor, agreement, introduction and repair.
