Abstract
This study analyzes how animals are represented in modern art, including the work of Enlightenment painter William Hogarth, and examines the changing nature of human-animal relationships. Furthermore, it addresses the question of whether animals have feelings. Hogarth's print Four Stages of Cruelty and Pietro Longhi's paintings Rhinoceros and Elephant will be analyzed to discuss the empathy they evoke. Drawing on critical animal studies, Hogarth will analyze the suffering and emotions of animals in modern European artworks dealing with the use of livestock, animal fighting and racing, hunting, and exhibition. In his works dealing with animal cruelty, Hogarth used shock therapy to replace animal pain with human suffering in order to elicit human sensory empathy. The artworks of the industrialization period reflect the accelerated human use of animals and the changing human perception of animals. Today's animal behaviorism has moved away from an anthropocentric view, reporting that animals are capable of feeling emotions, avoiding pain, and enjoying pleasure, and advocating for their rights. Therefore, this paper attempts to integrate the artist's artistic expression with philosophical discussions on bioethics and animal ethics.
